Axie Infinity

Axie Infinity, developed by Sky Mavis, is a pioneering play-to-earn blockchain game that popularized the GameFi movement. Players breed, battle, and trade fantasy creatures called Axies, which exist as NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. The project operates on its own Ronin sidechain, significantly reducing gas fees and improving transaction speeds compared to Ethereum mainnet. AXS serves as the governance and staking token, while SLP (Smooth Love Potion) functions as the in-game reward currency. At its peak in 2021, Axie Infinity demonstrated the massive potential of blockchain gaming, attracting millions of players globally, particularly in Southeast Asia. However, the project faced significant setbacks, including the $625M Ronin bridge hack in 2022 and a substantial decline in active users as token economics proved unsustainable during the bear market. Sky Mavis has since invested heavily in rebuilding trust, improving security, and launching new game modes. The NFT marketplace remains active but volumes have decreased from peak levels.
