Swiss privacy laws offer meaningful legal protection. The free tier includes 1GB of storage and limited daily messages, which is functional for light use. As a general email app, the encryption-first design introduces friction -- search is more limited than Gmail, and the interface, while improved, is less polished than mainstream alternatives. The bundled Proton VPN is a useful addition but more basic than dedicated VPN services. For users who prioritize privacy over convenience, Proton Mail is the clear leader.
