The Sims 4

The Sims 4 remains the genre's default life simulator, and its Create-A-Sim and build tools are as good as they've ever been, powering a genuinely enormous creative community. Going free-to-play in 2022 widened the audience considerably, and the base game alone offers a competent, if shallow, life-sim loop. The problem is what comes after: EA's expansion pack strategy has fragmented the experience into dozens of paid add-ons, some essential, some redundant, until a 'complete' Sims 4 can cost more than several full-priced games combined. The aging engine also shows real strain, load times, routing bugs, and pop-in are more noticeable than they should be a decade into the game's life. Gameplay depth and personality simulation genuinely improved through updates like relationships and infants overhauls, but core systems like careers still feel thin compared to what the franchise achieved in earlier entries. It's an accessible, endlessly customizable sandbox undercut by an aggressively monetized content strategy.
