Moncler is a luxury outerwear brand founded in 1952 in Monestier-de-Clermont, France, by Rene Ramillon and Andre Vincent, and named after an abbreviation of the alpine village where it began. The company initially produced quilted sleeping bags and tents before developing down jackets, which were used on French mountaineering expeditions in the 1950s and worn by the French national ski team at the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics.
Italian entrepreneur Remo Ruffini acquired the brand in 2003, repositioned it as a luxury house, and moved its headquarters to Milan. Moncler listed on the Borsa Italiana in 2013. The brand's core offering remains down jackets and technical outerwear, complemented by ready-to-wear, knitwear, footwear, and accessories. Its main lines include the mainline collection, Moncler Grenoble for skiwear and mountain performance, and Moncler Enfant for children. The Moncler Genius project, launched in 2018, produces rotating collaborations with designers including Pierpaolo Piccioli, Hiroshi Fujiwara, and Rick Owens.
In 2021 Moncler acquired Stone Island, forming the Moncler Group. The company operates directly managed boutiques in major cities worldwide and sells through its own e-commerce platform and select luxury retailers.
