REI Co-op Flash 55

4.4
product Overall
The Flash 55 is the best value in backpacking packs, full stop. At $199 to $219 it costs $60 to $180 less than the packs it competes with, yet it has a real perimeter frame, an adjustable torso, a cushioned hipbelt, a floating top lid, and one of the smarter compression systems in the category. At 2 lb 13 oz for a men's medium it sits under the three-pound line that separates lightweight packs from traditional haulers, and REI's 'Packmod' removable straps and pockets let you strip it to roughly 2 lb 8 oz. The 2023 redesign added torso adjustability, which fixed the biggest complaint about the original. Compromises exist and they are fair ones for the price. The fabric is thinner than an Osprey's and shows wear faster on abrasive rock, the hipbelt padding thins out once total load creeps past about 35 pounds, and the shoulder straps are narrower than some hikers like. The side pockets are also awkward to reach with the pack on. This is the pack for a recreational backpacker doing several trips a season who wants lightweight performance without a $400 receipt, and REI's return policy is a meaningful part of the value. Serious load-haulers and thru-hikers should look one tier up in comfort or one tier down in weight.

Adjustable torso and removable straps tune fit and weight
Under 3 lb with a real perimeter frame and floating lid
Backed by REI's one-year satisfaction guarantee
Fabric and hipbelt padding are a clear step below premium rivals
Comfort fades above roughly 35 lb total load
Side water-bottle pockets are hard to reach while wearing it
