Black Myth: Wukong

Black Myth: Wukong announces itself immediately with some of the most striking environmental art in the genre, mountain temples, mythic beast lairs, and boss arenas drawn straight from Journey to the West rendered with a fidelity that genuinely raises the bar for what Chinese studios can produce at AAA scale. Combat borrows soulslike stamina management and punishing bosses but layers in staff stances and spirit transformations absorbed from defeated enemies, giving the Destined One a toolkit that feels distinct rather than derivative. The bosses are the highlight, each a memorable, mechanically distinct set piece rooted in specific folklore. Level design leans more linear and corridor-like than the open-ended soulslike norm, which some purists will miss, and performance has been inconsistent depending on hardware and settings, occasional stutter undercuts otherwise cinematic encounters. Story delivery, largely through cutscenes and item lore, rewards familiarity with the source material more than newcomers. Still, as a directorial and visual achievement and a debut AAA outing, it is a genuinely impressive, if imperfect, landmark.
