Hearthstone earned its status as the digital card game benchmark by making deep strategy feel approachable. The 30-card deckbuilding around Warcraft's iconic classes hides real complexity beneath charming, tactile board interactions, minions slam down with satisfying weight, and hero powers add a layer of asymmetric identity most CCGs lack. Battlegrounds was a genuinely smart pivot, turning the core card pool into an eight-player auto-battler that plays completely differently from constructed formats, while Arena drafting offers a third distinct mode entirely. That variety is the game's biggest strength: there's rarely a single right way to play. The downside, over a decade in, is monetization. Keeping up with each Standard rotation requires either significant spending or a serious time investment in the free economy, and newer players face a steep gap against established collections. Competitively it remains excellent, with a strong streaming and esports pedigree that speaks to genuine depth. As an entry point to card games it's superb; as a wallet-friendly free-to-play experience, it's grown less generous over time.
