Lexmark is an American printer and imaging company formed in 1991 when IBM spins off its printer, typewriter, and keyboard operations in Lexington, Kentucky, to the investment firm Clayton & Dubilier; the name combines Lexington and mark. The company goes public in 1995 and builds its business around laser and inkjet printers, becoming a major supplier of monochrome and color laser machines, multifunction devices, and toner. Over time Lexmark exits the consumer inkjet market to focus on business printing, managed print services, and enterprise software, serving industries such as retail, banking, healthcare, and government, where its devices are widely deployed for high-volume document workflows. The company is known for building most of its own print engines and for embedding sensors and analytics into its fleet, using data from millions of connected printers to drive predictive service, an approach it also markets as an industrial Internet of Things platform. In 2016 Lexmark is acquired by a consortium of Chinese investors led by Ninestar Corporation and PAG Asia Capital and taken private. In 2025 Xerox acquires Lexmark, bringing the brand under American ownership again and combining two of the industry's best-known printing names. Lexmark remains headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, sells in more than 170 countries, and continues to operate under its own brand with a portfolio focused on business laser printers, multifunction products, and cloud print management.
