The Macallan is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery located on the Easter Elchies estate near Craigellachie in Speyside, Scotland. The distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, making it one of the earliest legally licensed distilleries in Scotland. The Macallan is owned by Edrington, a privately held Scottish spirits company that also holds Brugal, The Famous Grouse, and Highland Park. The distillery is renowned for its emphasis on sherry oak maturation, using both European and American oak casks seasoned with dry Oloroso and sweet sherry sourced from cooperages in Jerez, Spain. This commitment to cask quality has defined The Macallan's distinctive rich, full-bodied flavor profile characterized by dried fruit, spice, and chocolate notes. In 2018, The Macallan opened a new distillery and visitor experience designed by the architecture firm Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, featuring a rolling timber roof that integrates with the surrounding landscape. The Macallan's product range includes the Sherry Oak, Double Cask, and Triple Cask Matured series, as well as The Macallan Estate, Rare Cask, and limited edition releases that are actively sought by collectors. Rare and vintage Macallan bottles have repeatedly set auction records for the most expensive bottles of whisky ever sold, with individual bottles exceeding $1 million at auction. The core range begins with the 12-year-old expression, typically retailing above $60, while aged and limited expressions command substantially higher prices.
