Aspen Snowmass is a luxury ski destination in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, comprising four distinct mountains: Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass. The town of Aspen was founded as a silver mining camp in 1879 and boomed during the Colorado Silver Boom before declining sharply after the silver crash of 1893. Skiing arrived in Aspen in the 1930s and 1940s, with the first chairlift on Aspen Mountain opening in 1947. The town hosted the FIS World Alpine Ski Championships in 1950, putting it on the international map. The Aspen Skiing Company, founded by Walter Paepcke, developed the resort alongside Paepcke's broader vision of Aspen as a cultural and intellectual center, which led to the establishment of the Aspen Institute and the Aspen Music Festival.
The four mountains collectively offer over 5,500 acres of skiable terrain across more than 330 marked trails, with vertical drops ranging from 2,030 feet at Buttermilk to 4,406 feet at Snowmass. Aspen Mountain is known for its challenging expert terrain and its status as the social center of the resort, with the famous Silver Queen Gondola providing access from the center of town. Snowmass is the largest of the four mountains and offers the most diverse terrain, including the vast Hanging Valley Wall and the Burnt Mountain zone. Buttermilk hosts the Winter X Games annually, while Aspen Highlands is favored by locals and expert skiers for its Highland Bowl.
