Deer Valley Resort is a luxury ski resort located in Park City, Utah, approximately 36 miles east of Salt Lake City. The resort opened in December 1981 under the leadership of Edgar Stern, who envisioned a ski experience that prioritized service, grooming, and a refined atmosphere. From its inception, Deer Valley has limited daily skier numbers through a ticket cap, a policy that remains in effect and ensures uncrowded slopes. The resort was acquired by POWDR Corporation in a deal reported in 2017, with Alterra Mountain Company subsequently acquiring Deer Valley in 2024 for approximately $2 billion, the largest single-resort transaction in ski industry history.
Deer Valley offers approximately 2,026 acres of skiable terrain across six mountains, with 103 runs served by 21 lifts, including a high-speed gondola. The resort is particularly renowned for its immaculate grooming, with the ski patrol and grooming teams maintaining what is widely regarded as the best-prepared snow surface in North America. Deer Valley is a skiers-only mountain; snowboarding is not permitted, a policy that has been maintained since opening. The resort hosted the slalom, moguls, and aerials events during the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and has been named the top ski resort in North America by the readers of SKI Magazine more than any other resort.
Deer Valley's luxury positioning extends beyond the mountain to its base area and hospitality offerings. The resort features several on-mountain dining venues, including the Mariposa restaurant, which offers refined New American cuisine and is regularly ranked among the top ski resort restaurants in the country. Lodging options include The St. Regis Deer Valley, Stein Eriksen Lodge (named after the Norwegian Olympic champion who served as the resort's director of skiing for decades), and the Montage Deer Valley. The resort is currently undergoing a major expansion with the addition of new terrain, lifts, and base facilities. Peak-season rates at top Deer Valley properties typically range from $500 to $2,000 per night.
