Google Pay is Google's digital wallet and payments platform, used for storing payment cards, tap-to-pay purchases via NFC, sending money to contacts, and checking out online and in apps. It originated as Android Pay in 2015 and was rebranded Google Pay in 2018; the wallet and payments functions were later consolidated under the Google Wallet app on Android, while Google discontinued its standalone iOS app in mid-2024, directing iPhone users toward Apple Pay instead.
On Android, the app stores debit and credit cards, loyalty cards, transit passes, event tickets, vaccination records, and digital IDs, and enables contactless payments at supported terminals and within apps and websites that integrate Google Pay checkout. Peer-to-peer money transfers between contacts are supported in a limited number of countries, including the US and India, subject to Google's payments terms.
Google Pay is free to use for consumers; Google charges merchants standard processing fees through its payments infrastructure. It is developed by Google LLC, headquartered in Mountain View, California, and offers a developer API that lets merchants and other apps integrate one-tap checkout. The service requires a Google account and is not usable offline.
