The company was founded in 1958 by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, which developed the original Gulfstream I turboprop as the first purpose-built business aircraft. Gulfstream has since produced a succession of large-cabin, long-range business jets that have defined the ultra-long-range segment of business aviation. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics Corporation, which acquired Gulfstream in 1999. Gulfstream's current product lineup includes the G280 super-midsize jet, the G500 and G600 large-cabin jets, and the flagship G700 and G800 ultra-long-range aircraft. The G800 holds the distinction of being the longest-range business jet in production, with a range of 8,000 nautical miles at Mach 0.85.
