Joel Robuchon was a French chef and restaurateur who, at the time of his death in 2018, held more Michelin stars than any other chef in the world, with a total of 32 stars across his restaurant portfolio. Born in 1945 in Poitiers, France, Robuchon began his culinary career at age 15 and rose to prominence as the chef of Jamin in Paris, which earned three Michelin stars in 1984. He was named Chef of the Century by the Gault & Millau guide in 1990.

After initially retiring in 1996, Robuchon returned to the restaurant industry in 2003 with L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon, a revolutionary concept featuring counter seating around an open kitchen. The Atelier format was replicated in Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Bangkok, and other cities. The concept made high-level French cuisine more accessible by offering smaller tasting portions and a less formal atmosphere while maintaining exceptional culinary standards.

Robuchon's culinary style emphasized perfection in technique and the elevation of simple ingredients. His signature potato puree, made with an exceptionally high ratio of butter to potato, became one of the most celebrated dishes in modern French gastronomy. His approach to cuisine prioritized product quality and precision above elaborate presentation.

Following Robuchon's death, his restaurant group has continued to operate under the direction of his longtime associates and protegees. The Joel Robuchon brand encompasses fine dining restaurants, L'Atelier locations, Le Deli Robuchon casual concepts, and pastry boutiques. The group maintains a significant presence in Asia, Europe, and North America.
