Departures built a genuinely distinctive model in American luxury media: a title that reached its readers not through newsstand sales but through the closed distribution of American Express Platinum and Centurion cardholders, which allowed decades of well-crafted travel journalism and design coverage without needing to chase mass circulation. That closed-loop model is also, inevitably, the source of its current uncertainty. The discontinuation of the US edition at the end of 2023 and the shuttering of departures.com mark a real diminishment of the brand's original footprint, even as Departures International continues in Europe under a different publisher. The surviving international edition maintains the recognizable service-journalism format, city guides, hotel reporting, and profiles of chefs and designers, but it now operates as a more clearly commercial extension of the Amex ecosystem than as an independent editorial voice. It remains a polished, useful resource for affluent international travelers, but the brand's American retrenchment raises real questions about its long-term trajectory and independence.
