PUBG: Battlegrounds

PUBG: Battlegrounds is the battle royale genre's founding text, and its grounded, ballistics-focused gunplay still feels distinct from the faster, more arcade-y shooters it inspired. The tension of the shrinking blue zone, methodical looting, and realistic weapon handling reward patient, tactical play over twitch reflexes, which remains a compelling contrast to Fortnite or Apex Legends. The 2022 shift to free-to-play reinvigorated its player base and the concurrent player records it still holds speak to lasting appeal. That said, the game shows its age in places: visual fidelity and animation quality lag behind more modern competitors, netcode and hit registration issues persist for a game this many years into live service, and the map roster, while solid, hasn't grown as aggressively as rivals'. Monetization leans heavily on cosmetics, which is fair, but the core moment-to-moment loop hasn't evolved dramatically season to season. It's a foundational battle royale experience that's aged reasonably well but is being outpaced technically by newer entrants.
