Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second chapter of Square Enix's remake trilogy, expanding the beloved 1997 epic into a vast open-world adventure across the planet beyond Midgar. Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, and Red XIII pursue Sephiroth through gorgeously realized regions from the grasslands of Kalm to the Gold Saucer's mini-game wonderland, with chocobo riding, world intel hunts, and the addictive Queen's Blood card game filling every corner. Combat refines Remake's hybrid of real-time action and tactical ATB pausing with synergy abilities that pair party members in cinematic team attacks. Its ensemble storytelling swings from slapstick to devastation as it approaches the original's most famous moment. Rebirth won wide acclaim as one of 2024's best RPGs.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a staggering expansion of Remake's foundation, trading Midgar's corridors for an open world stuffed with things to do, chocobo racing, Queen's Blood (a card game good enough to be its own release), combat simulators, and region-spanning side content that rarely feels like padding thanks to genuinely charming writing. Combat is the highlight: synergy abilities let party members combo in real time while ATB gauges preserve tactical depth, and boss fights are consistently spectacular. The open-world design occasionally sprawls too wide, with tower-unlock busywork echoing lesser open-world formulas, but the sheer density of quality content and gorgeous, painterly environments largely justify it. The story swings hard between comic-relief minigames and gut-punch tragedy as it approaches the original's most infamous scene, and the ensemble cast carries it. This is one of the finest RPGs of the decade, let down only slightly by open-world bloat.
