Deuter Speed Lite 25

product Overall
The Speed Lite 25 is the daypack for hikers who find the class-leading Osprey Talon 22 overbuilt — and that is a bigger group than Osprey would like to admit. At 1 pound 9 ounces it undercuts the Talon by a full 13 ounces, and the design philosophy shows in how it moves: vest-style shoulder straps and a flexible U-frame keep the load stable and close to your back when you are covering ground quickly on rolling terrain, where a conventional daypack starts to bounce. Crucially, it is not a frameless sack — the actual frame and hip fins mean it still carries respectably with a rain shell, lunch, and two liters of water aboard, which is exactly the load most day hikes involve. At $100-115 it also saves real money against the Talon's $160-175. The limits appear when you push it. The thin hipbelt gives up meaningful support past about 15 pounds, so shoulder-season loads with extra layers and gear will remind you what the Talon's substantial harness is for. And the fit system is far less adjustable, so if your torso sits outside the average range, try before buying. As a fast-and-light regular's pack it is excellent; as your only pack it is limiting.
