Inscryption is Daniel Mullins' genre-defying masterpiece that begins as a creepy card game played against a shadowy figure in a cabin and unravels into something far stranger. Its deckbuilding core is excellent on its own, sacrificing creatures to summon stronger ones, exploiting sigils, and literally tilting the scales, but between rounds players walk the cabin in first person, solving escape-room puzzles whose solutions bleed back into the card game in rule-breaking ways. Saying more spoils one of gaming's great narrative rug-pulls, layered with found-footage ARG storytelling that extends beyond the game itself. It won numerous Game of the Year awards for 2021, including the Grand Prize at the Independent Games Festival, and stands as the high-water mark of meta-fictional game design.
