NieR: Automata

NieR: Automata remains one of the finest action RPGs ever made, and eight years on it hasn't lost an ounce of its power. Yoko Taro and PlatinumGames fuse fluid hack-and-slash combat with genre-hopping shmup sequences, twin-stick shooting, and even platforming, all anchored by Keiichi Okabe's haunting, genre-defying soundtrack. What elevates it beyond a great action game is its structure: three interlocking playthroughs that recontextualize the same events from android, machine, and human perspectives, building toward Ending E, one of gaming's most moving finales. 2B, 9S, and A2 carry real emotional weight amid philosophical musings on consciousness and purpose that never feel pretentious. Combat is satisfying but has a shallower depth ceiling than pure character-action titles, and some open-world traversal feels dated. Visuals hold up thanks to art direction more than technical fidelity. Still, this is essential, genre-defining work that rewards patience and multiple playthroughs with a rare emotional payoff few games ever achieve.
