Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the rare franchise entry that feels like a genuine creative leap rather than a safe iteration. After a decade of the New Super Mario Bros. template, Nintendo abandons formula entirely: the Wonder Flower gimmick means almost every course pivots into something unpredictable, singing piranha plants, a level that becomes a rhythm game, Mario liquefying into a puddle, and the hand-drawn character animation gives every enemy and power-up a personality the series hasn't had since its 16-bit days. The Elephant and Drill power-ups aren't just novelties either; they open genuinely new traversal options that ripple through level design. The badge system is a clever difficulty equalizer, letting newcomers coast with extra jumps while veterans hunt secrets with harder constraints. Local co-op with shadow-play online assists makes it a great couch game, though it's built as a platformer first and a party game second. If there's a knock, it's that the wonder-effect gimmicks can occasionally overshadow pure platforming rigor. Still, this is the most inventive 2D Mario in a generation.
