Streets of Rage 4

Streets of Rage 4 is proof that a beloved genre doesn't need reinvention, just craftsmanship. The hand-drawn animation from Lizardcube is gorgeous frame by frame, giving Wood Oak City a neon-noir vibrancy the Genesis originals could only gesture toward, and the combo system built around recoverable health and risk-reward specials adds genuine tactical depth to what looks like straightforward brawling. Juggling enemies, chaining wall bounces, and managing your special-move health bar under pressure creates a rhythm that rewards mastery without punishing newcomers too harshly. Four-player local co-op is chaotic fun, and the Koshiro-led soundtrack is an electronic love letter to the series' roots. The story is functional at best, this is a beat 'em up, not a narrative showcase, and the base campaign's stage variety can feel repetitive before the Mr. X Nightmare DLC's survival mode and extra characters round things out. Still, as a love letter to a genre many thought dead, it's about as good as modern beat 'em ups get.
