Fallout 4 smooths over some of the series' RPG friction, a simplified dialogue wheel, a streamlined skill system, in favor of best-in-class settlement building and moment-to-moment shooting that finally feels satisfying alongside VATS. The Commonwealth is dense with handcrafted encounters, faction intrigue between the Brotherhood, Railroad, Institute, and Minutemen, and companion writing that ranges from great (Nick Valentine, Piper) to forgettable. Settlement construction is the real innovation, turning ruined suburbs into thriving communities, though the systems can eat dozens of hours for players who'd rather be exploring. A decade on, Creation Engine jank persists: physics glitches, occasional crashes, and dated animations. Mod support on PC is extraordinary and effectively doubles the game's lifespan. The recent Fallout TV series brought a wave of new wastelanders, and it's easy to see why, this remains a hugely replayable open world, even if its writing rarely matches New Vegas's ambition.
