Abu Garcia is a fishing tackle brand with Swedish roots, founded in 1921 by Carl August Borgstrom as AB Urfabriken in Svangsta, Sweden, originally manufacturing pocket watches and taxi meters. The company shifted to fishing reels in the 1940s and in 1952 introduced the Ambassadeur, a round baitcasting reel whose precision, centrifugal braking, and durability made it one of the most influential reel designs ever produced; original Ambassadeurs remain sought after by collectors. The Abu Garcia name emerged from the company's long distribution partnership with the American firm Garcia Corporation. Today the brand's lineup centers on low-profile baitcasting reels such as the Revo series, along with Cardinal and Zenon spinning reels, and rods including the Veritas and Vendetta lines, with a strong following among bass anglers in North America and Japan. Abu Garcia has been owned by Pure Fishing since 1998, joining a portfolio that includes PENN, Berkley, and Shakespeare, and the brand is managed from Pure Fishing's headquarters in Columbia, South Carolina. A facility in Svangsta continues to be associated with the brand's heritage, and the company still markets limited-run Ambassadeur models that trace directly back to the 1952 original.
