Acala

Acala positions itself as the DeFi hub of the Polkadot ecosystem, offering a suite of financial primitives including a decentralized exchange, liquid staking (LDOT), and its native stablecoin aUSD. As a Polkadot parachain winner, Acala benefits from shared security and cross-chain interoperability through XCM messaging, which is a genuine technical advantage over siloed L1s. Its EVM+ compatibility layer allows Ethereum developers to deploy Solidity contracts while accessing Substrate-native features, though adoption remains modest compared to established EVM chains like Arbitrum or Polygon. The aUSD stablecoin suffered a significant exploit in August 2022, where billions of tokens were erroneously minted, severely damaging confidence. While the team addressed the issue through governance, the incident highlights smart contract risk and the fragility of algorithmic/collateralized stablecoin designs.
