LayerZero has established itself as one of the leading cross-chain messaging protocols, enabling developers to build truly omnichain applications rather than siloed dApps on individual chains. The protocol's Ultra Light Node architecture is clever—it separates the oracle and relayer roles to reduce trust assumptions without requiring full on-chain light clients. Major DeFi protocols like Stargate Finance and SushiSwap have integrated LayerZero, demonstrating real adoption. However, the protocol's security model still relies on the assumption that the oracle and relayer won't collude, which is a meaningful trust assumption that critics rightly point out. The controversial $ZRO airdrop and Sybil filtering process also left a sour taste for many community members. Despite these concerns, LayerZero's broad chain support (50+ networks) and developer tooling make it a genuinely useful piece of infrastructure for the multi-chain future.
