The Sailor Professional Gear is one of the finest writing instruments in its price range, and arguably the gold standard for Japanese fountain pen craftsmanship. What sets it apart is the nib — Sailor's 21k gold nibs have a distinctive feedback that pen enthusiasts often describe as 'pencil-like,' offering exceptional control and character that's quite different from the buttery smoothness of European pens. The flat-top cigar-shaped design is elegant and compact, though it does run smaller than Western pens, which may not suit larger hands. Build quality is impeccable, with precise resin construction and reliable cartridge/converter filling. The pen writes beautifully out of the box with virtually no need for adjustment. My main criticism is the proprietary converter, which holds relatively little ink, and the price has crept up significantly in recent years. Still, for anyone who values the writing experience above all else, the Pro Gear delivers something genuinely special that's difficult to find elsewhere.
