Meta's Llama 3 represents a significant leap forward in open-source large language models. Available in 8B and 70B parameter variants (with a 405B model following later), it delivers impressive performance that rivals many proprietary models across reasoning, coding, and general knowledge tasks. The fully open-source nature under a permissive license makes it exceptionally accessible for developers, researchers, and businesses looking to self-host or fine-tune models without licensing costs.

Strengths include excellent benchmark performance relative to its size class, broad availability across major cloud platforms and inference providers, a generous 8K context window, and a vastly improved tokenizer with a 128K vocabulary. The model excels at code generation and multilingual tasks compared to its predecessor.

Limitations include a smaller default context window compared to some competitors, and the largest 405B variant requires substantial hardware for self-hosting.
