The Leica brand name, derived from Leitz Camera, was established in 1925 when the company introduced the Leica I, the first commercially successful 35mm camera, which revolutionized photography by making compact, portable cameras viable. Leica Camera AG is majority-owned by the Blackstone Group, with a significant minority stake held by Andreas Kaufmann through the Kaufmann family's ACM Projektentwicklung. Leica's product range encompasses digital rangefinder cameras (M-System), mirrorless cameras (SL-System and Q series), medium format cameras (S-System), instant cameras (Sofort), compact cameras, and a comprehensive range of lenses. The Leica M rangefinder system, a direct descendant of the original 1925 camera, remains the brand's most iconic product line and is favored by documentary, street, and reportage photographers worldwide. Leica lenses are renowned for their optical quality, rendering characteristics, and precision engineering. The company also produces binoculars, spotting scopes, and rangefinders under its sport optics division. Leica collaborates with smartphone manufacturers, most notably Xiaomi and previously Huawei, on mobile camera technology. Manufacturing takes place primarily at the company's facility in Wetzlar, Germany, where cameras and lenses are assembled with significant handwork. Leica operates its own retail stores, called Leica Stores and Leica Boutiques, in major cities globally, and distributes through authorized camera retailers.
